Students Are Angry About Ghetto Themed Off Campus Compton Cookout

Some UC San Diego students are angry about a ghetto-themed “Compton Cookout”. Some of the angered students even took part in a day of protest.

A party invitation posted on Facebook told students to wear large T-shirts, rapper-style urban clothing by makers such as FUBU, and gold chains, according to a copy posted on the Web site for San Diego TV station 10News. Women were urged to go as "ghetto chicks." The post said such items as watermelon and cheap beer would be served.

They are also angry because of a segment on a student-run television station that used racial epithets to defend the off-campus party.

At this time, the University has frozen funding to the campus television channel until it has been determined that new rules make sure that student fees do not support hate speech.

The L.A. Times reported that members of the Pi Kappa Alpha were identified as among the organizers, but the fraternity’s president has distanced himself from the event, saying his club did not sponsor it.

The campus plans to hold a teach-in about the issue next week but it is voluntary and some people feel that the only people that will show up are those individuals that are already sensitive and aware of these issues.

Katrina Cop Admits To Killing Of Unarmed Civilians Cover-up

The blue wall of silence finally has a small crack in it. The Huffington Post reported today that a retired lieutenant police officer pleaded guilty in the cover-up of the department's probe of the shootings to conceal that police gunned down unarmed civilians during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The supervisor of the police probe, Michael Lohman, a 41 year old 21-year veteran of the force, pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to obstruct justice. The federal prosecutor said Lohman is cooperating with investigators who want to know more about the police department's actions.

Interestingly, a state judge throw out the original charges against seven officers that were charged with murder or attempted murder. Fortunately, the federal authorities then stepped in to investigate.

In unsealing the case against Lohman, prosecutors drew a picture of how the shootings at the Danziger bridge immediately spawned a cover-up.

Lohman went to the scene and saw no weapons near or with the victims of the shooting, federal officials said, and concluded the shootings were not justified.

The documents allege Lohman and an unidentified investigator he supervised drafted different versions of false reports. Among the claims was a fabricated statement by one of the victims that she had seen her nephew and others firing guns on the bridge.

Federal officials say Lohman drafted his own 17-page false report after becoming dissatisfied that another investigator's false account was not logical.

The Huffington Post also reported that when another investigator planned to plant a gun at the scene, Lohman just asked him if it was "clean," meaning it couldn't be traced, according to the documents. Read Story.

Mortgage Modification Scams

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has stepped up enforcement on mortgage modification scams. They have set up Operation Home Lies which is a national federal and state law enforcement effort to go after mortgage modification scams that target homeowners facing foreclosure.

If you are in need of mortgage assistance, be vigilant of companies offering to help modify your mortgage while asking you to pay an advance fee to stop foreclosure.

If you are having difficulty making your mortgage payment, the first call you should make is to your loan servicer. If you feel you are not getting resolution with your servicer and think you are in danger of facing foreclosure, you can call the Homeowner's HOPE(TM) hotline at 888-995-HOPE.

The Homeowner's Hope Hotline information can be verified on the White House Blog.

President Obama Wants School Focus On College And Careers

The President wants to make sure that students attending primary and secondary education schools are either career or college ready when they finish high school.

Obama told a gathering of the nation's governors at the White House that students in the U.S. lag behind by several crucial measures. For example, eighth-grade students rank ninth in the world in math and 11th in science.

He also mentioned that business owners have told him too many young adults do not have the necessary skills to be effective in the job when hired.

Since so many American students do not successfully complete high school and they are not interested in college, it will be great to prepare these students for emerging industry jobs that do not require a college degree. To complete globally, students that are interested in college will need to be better prepared to effectively compete against global competition.

What will America do about the students who grow up in poverty. All indicators show that this group of students make up the largest share of students that do not finish high school.

Even though children make up 25% of the total population in America, they are 35% of the poor population in the country according to the National Poverty Center.

If the Presidents new proposals do not focus on why the poor have fared poorly in education when compared to middle class and wealthier students, will these new proposals and investments make a difference?

Over the years, politicians have talked about increasing education funding for those students at the pre-k and kindergarten level. This will help, but what about all the kids that start falling behind in elementary and middle school. The support of parents which too many students do not have is a big part of the equation which is not being discussed.

Breakdancer Jailed For $3,000 In Floor Damage

Police said they've arrested a teenager who caused thousands of dollars in damage to a western New York home's hardwood floor by break dancing on it while wearing a large diamond belt buckle.

Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard said the 18-year-old named R. Baczkiewicz apparently was intoxicated when he arrived at a house party held by the victim's daughters in Elma, a small town just east of Buffalo. He said when the teen repeatedly tried to break dance he gouged the floor and caused about $3,000 worth of damage.

Police said the victim (homeowner) was on vacation at the time.

A sheriff's deputy arrested the teen Sunday night at his home in neighboring Cheektowaga, a Buffalo suburb.

Baczkiewicz was charged with criminal mischief in the second degree, a class D felony, and criminal trespass in the second degree, a class A misdemeanor. He was taking to the Holding Center on no bail, pending his arraignment in the Town of Elma Court.

It is necessary to point out that the defendant is Caucasian so this not necessarily a racist arrest. However, there is a certain amount of hatred for the Hip-Hop culture and you have to wonder if the police that arrested the young man have anything against the this culture in general and the people associated with it in particular.

The New Jim Crow

There are more African Americans under correctional control today -- in prison or jail, on probation or parole -- than were enslaved in 1850, a decade before the Civil War began.

The New Jim Crow is a book written by Michelle Alexander. She goes to great lengths to answer a recurring question. She writes how this question has surfaced in mainstream and ethnic media for more than a decade. The phrasing of the question differs depending on who's asking the question and why, but the question tends to boil down to this: Where have all the black men gone? They're missing in churches, missing from their families, missing from college campuses, and absent from work. Black women can't find a man to marry. Black children don't know where to find their fathers. Where are those guys?

There are always many variables when trying to determine what is going on with American African men in America today. Michele Alexander puts forth her theories that make a solid attempt to answer the recurring question - Where Have all the black men gone?

Michelle believes that too many black men have been targeted unevenly and unequally when compared to white men during the so-called War on Drugs.

She writes, that people of color are rounded up -- frequently at young ages -- for relatively minor drug offenses, branded felons, and then relegated to a permanent second-class status in which they may be denied the right to vote, automatically excluded from juries, and subjected to legal discrimination in employment, housing, access to education, and public benefits. Those who are lucky enough to get a job upon release from prison find that up to 100 percent of their wages may be garnished to pay fees, fines, and court costs as well as the costs of their imprisonment and accumulated child support.

Michele also reports that in 2005, for example, 4 out 5 drug arrests were for possession and only 1 out of 5 were for sales. Most people in state prison for drug offenses have no history of violence or significant selling activity. Nearly 80 percent of the increase in drug arrests in the 1990s -- the period of the most dramatic expansion of the drug war -- was for marijuana possession, a drug less harmful than alcohol or tobacco. In some states, though, African Americans have comprised 80 to 90 percent of all drug convictions.

The mass incarceration of people of color through the War on Drugs is a big part of the reason that a black child born today is less likely to be raised by both parents than a black child born during slavery. The absence of black fathers from families across America is not simply a function of laziness, immaturity, or too much time watching Sports Center. Hundreds of thousands of black men have disappeared into prisons and jails, locked away for drug crimes that are largely ignored when committed by whites.

She also believes that this system isn't about crime control; it about racial control. Yes, even in the age of Obama she writes.

Everyone knows that if you do the crime, you should be ready to do the time. One has to ask the question of why in America are we not using one standard to penalize crimes. Why should one group receives minor or no consequences for their crimes while another group receives major consequences for the same crime? Many answers can be found in a book written by an African American judge in New York who tabloid critics called Turn Em Loose Bruce. Judge Bruce Wright wrote the book Black Robes, White Justice. Why our justice system does not work for blacks.

County By County Health Rankings

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has funded a health care study called County Health Rankings which reports on the overall health of those individuals living in each of the 50 American states. It is also possible to go to a particular state on their web site and see a ranking for each county within that state.

Each county is ranked within the state on how healthy people are and how long they live. They also are ranked on key factors that affect health such as: smoking, obesity, binge drinking, access to primary care providers, rates of high school graduation, rates of violent crime, air pollution levels, liquor store density, unemployment rates and number of children living in poverty.

After reviewing a few counties in different states, it becomes clear how many of the counties that have the best health are also the wealthiest counties in the state. The poorest counties in the state tend to have the worst health.

It is a travesty that poverty in America is typically associated with poorer health, lower levels of education, higher unemployment, lower income levels, and more crime for all races and ethnicities.

New Credit Card Law For Cardholders

The new federal government credit card law started Monday, February 22nd. The main reason this law was created is because credit card companies were finding too many ways to put Americans with credit cards deeper into debt.

Below is a list of changes affecting all credit cards holders.

INTEREST RATES

The rate cannot be raised in the first year after an account is opened unless an introductory rate has come to an end. After that, cardholders must be notified 45 days in advance of any rate change.

For existing balances, rates can't be raised unless the account is at least 60 days past due. If payments are made on time for six consecutive months, the original rate must be restored.

There is still no cap on interest rates that a credit card company can charge.

DISCLOSURES

Cardholders will see how many months it will take to pay off a balance if only minimum payments are made. Statements will also indicate how much needs to be paid each month to pay off a balance within three years.

SERVICE FEES

Service fees, such as activation and annual fees, will be capped at 25 percent of the credit limit during the first year of use. After that, there is no cap.

One popular card, Premier Bannkcard, for those with poor credit scores use to charge
$256 in first-year fees for a $250 credit line. These excessive fees will not be as high in the future because of the new law.

OVER-THE-LIMIT FEES

The cardholder must specifically agree to permit transactions that exceed the credit limit. Only then can over-the-limit fees be charged. But the fees can't be triggered by other fees or interest charges. Only one over-the-limit fee may be imposed during a billing cycle. No over-the-limit fees may be charged unless the cardholder has specifically agreed to permit transactions exceeding their authorized credit limit. These fees can no longer be triggered by other fees or interest charges imposed by the card issuer, and only one such fee may be imposed during a billing cycle.

UNIVERSAL DEFAULT

Card companies cannot raise interest rates on existing credit card balances. Interest rates can't rise during the first year an account is open, unless the original agreement spelled out a promotional rate for a limited time.

Consumers with older accounts must be informed of any interest rate increase on new charges at least 45 days in advance. They must also be given a chance to opt out of the hike by canceling the account and paying down the balance at the old interest rate. If an interest rate is increased, the card company must review the account once every six months to assess whether the rate should be dropped.

STUDENTS

Credit cards may no longer be issued to anyone under age 21, unless the applicant has a co-signer, or can show independent means to repay the debt. Colleges must disclose any marketing deals they make with credit card companies. Banks are not allowed to hand out gifts on or near campuses or at college-related events anymore.

This is a good one because in 2008, 84 percent of undergraduates had at least one credit card. Average balances topped $3,100.

President Obama Finally Putting Forward Health Care Proposal

The president is finally stepping up to the plate on health care. His will put forward a proposal on health care that he hopes will bridge the gap between Democrats in the House and Senate. In the name of transparency, the White house bill will be placed online this Monday, February 22nd.

It appears as though the Democrats are now willing to make it happen without any Republican support through a process called Reconciliation. This process will allow a simple majority (51) in the Senate to pass the legislation instead of the super majority (60) which is basically impossible now that Republican Scott Brown has won the Senate seat in Massachusetts.

With Scott Brown, the Republicans now have 41 Senators who can basically stop almost all bills from moving forward with a filibuster. Since the Republicans have filibustered bills by the Obama White House more than any other administration in history, the Democrats are going to try Reconciliation to keep the filibuster from taking place on health care reform.

Americans should benefit tremendously as a country if reasonable and smart health care reform takes place that will ultimately slow down cost increases, reduce waste, and increase access to health care.

The United States is the only industrialized nation that does not guarantee access to health care as a right of citizenship. 28 industrialized nations have single payer universal health care systems, while 1 (Germany) has a multipayer universal health care system like President Clinton proposed for the United States.

Here are some facts:

1.The United States spends at least 40% more per capita on health care than any other industrialized country with universal health care.

2.Single payer universal health care is not socialized medicine. Health care providers would be in fee for service practice, and would not be employees of the government, which would be socialized medicine. Single payer health care is not socialized medicine, any more than the public funding of education is socialized education, or the public funding of the defense industry is socialized defense.

3.Studies reveal that citizens in universal health care systems have more doctor visits and more hospital days than in the US.

4.There would be free choice of health care providers under a single payer universal health care system, unlike our current managed care system in which people are forced to see providers on the insurer’s panel to obtain medical benefits.

Are All Americans On Gov't. Suicide Missions Terrorists?

Joseph Stack III a software engineer from Austin Texas decided that he could not take it anymore. He launched a suicide attack on the IRS agency Thursday by crashing his small plane into an office building containing nearly 200 IRS employees.

Mr. Stack was not happy with the American tax laws, big business executives, and government. He posted a note to his website shortly before taking to his plane and then targeting the IRS office building.

He mentioned the 1986 tax legislation started as a favor to IBM and stated that the bill "made it extremely difficult for information technology professionals to work as self-employed individuals, forcing most to become company employees". This was reported by the N.Y. Times.

They also reported that many software engineers and other such professionals say that the law denies them the opportunity to become wealthy entrepreneurs and that it makes it harder to increase and refine their skills, eventually diminishing their income.

Will Joseph Stack III receive the terrorist treatment or will he find sympathy for his transgressions against Americans and U.S. government porperty?

Joe Stack posted his manifesto online.

Less Invasive Hip Surgeries Available Today

As many Americans reach middle age, they find that their bodies are starting to break down. Sometimes the breakdown occurs in the hips and surgery is required to replace a hip.

After living with a deteriorating hip for a period of time, many cannot take the pain and the discomfort any longer. These individuals will need an orthopedic surgeon to replace a hip which has been a successful medical procedure over the years.

There is a less invasive hip surgery method that is being used today. Those in the position having to think about a possible hip replacement should consider all of their options. Speaking with a physician about the advantages and disadvantages of the different procedures in the best thing to do.

Utah Thinking about Dropping 12th Grade

When times become tough and money needs to be saved, some politicians will propose what would have been unthinkable when the economy was healthy. Some in the state of Utah have started thinking about eliminating the 12th grade reports the Los Angeles Times.

Are teenagers ready for the real world at 17 years of age? Aside from the money saved, what are the other benefits and possible costs associated with eliminating 12th grade? Could this be the start of a new movement in the United States?

Remember that America is already closer to the bottom than the top when it's education system is compared to other developed and wealthy nations. It would be important to know if dropping 12th grade would improve the education experience for those young adults affected.

iPhone Can Help You Track Stolen Phone

Just when you thought that you have heard all of the benefits of the iPhone compared to other smartphones, you find that there is another reason to consider switching to this smartphone if you do not already own one.

The iPhone along with a special package offered through AT&T and Apple can assist anyone that has their iPhone stolen or lost tracked to it's current location. It is even possible to shut the iPhone down from a remote location.

All of these options are handled through MobileMe. This is the special software package offered through AT&T and Apple. The software synchronizes data between your iPhone and home computer. It also includes a global positioning system.

The cost is $99/year for an individual or $149/year for the family. There is a free 60 day trial for the individual account at Apple.

Here is a great story about a guy whose iPhone was stolen from his car while he was at church. He used MobileMe to locate the phone and then printed out pictures of the suspect's house. Him and another victim contacted police and had their iPhones returned the following day.

The cost of MobileMe for those not interested in synchronizing data between their iPhone and home computer would be the same as buying an insurance policy for the phone. This option would not make sense for everyone, but it could be better than the $400 to $500 to replace a missing iPhone for some people.

Driver Used Mannequin In Car Pool Lane

A 61 year old New Yorker faces a $135 traffic fine for using a mannequin as her "plus one" in the car pool lane for vehicles with multiple passengers during rush hour on the Long Island Expressway in New York.

A sheriff's deputy on Long Island became curious when he saw the passenger wearing sunglasses and using the visor. According to the officer, the problem is that the sky was overcast.

When the officer stopped the vehicle, he found the mannequin, fully dressed with a long dark wig, blazer, shirt and scarf.

One can only wonder if this was worth it for the driver. It really depends on how long the driver used the mannequin in order to drive in the fast lane versus the $135ticket as well as any other damage to her drivers license.

5.7 GDP Growth Misleading

Things are not always what they seem to be.

Despite the federal government’s positive report on GDP recently, most economists believe that the current growth numbers are misleading. Many of these economists are also skeptical about significant growth in GDP in 2010.

With real growth at rates below previous recessions in 1975 and 1982, jobless rates in the double digits and limited access to credit, many economists believe that the US economy is still weak.

The government mentioned GDP growing a whopping 5.7% during the 4th quarter of 2009. This is not impressive when you look behind the numbers.

To put that 5.7% figure into perspective you need to know that on average GDP grows around 3% +/- 1.5%. That is, GDP usually ranges between 1.5% to 4.5% growth. So a figure of 5.7% is massive growth.

Most of the growth came from businesses investing massive amounts of money in expanding their inventories. This method of GDP growth is not likely to be duplicated quarter after quarter.

GDP is calculated as: Consumer spending + Investment by businesses (including in inventory) + Government spending + Exports, net...or C + I + G + E = GDP. Normally, the allocation of GDP between these four broad categories is listed below:

C = 65-70%
I = 10-15%
G = 20-30%
E = -5%

In the 4th quarter, the investment by business was 3.4% of that 5.7%, or approximately 60% of the GDP figure. Remember that investment by business is typically only 10 to 15% of GDP so this was an anomaly.

Consumer spending which is usually 65 to 70% of GDP was only 25% in the 4th quarter of 2009. More precisely, it was 1.4% of the 5.7% of the GDP total.

Consumer spending is the oil that greases the economic wheel for the the US economy. This why Americans are goaded to spend, spend, and spend. When consumers stop spending because they are losing jobs, home values are falling, and equity cannot be pulled out of homes, consumers cut back on spending.

It is usually beneficial to look behind the numbers whenever the data is available. As Brothers Connected, that is what we plan to do for one another as we move forward together.

1 Out Of 4 Homeowners Underwater

Mortgage rates and delinquency rates continue to rise in America. The number of homeowners "underwater" -- those owing more on their mortgage than the home is worth -- now stands at roughly 11 million, about a quarter of all mortgage holders, according to real estate research firm First American CoreLogic. This number is expected to rise.

There is a belief by many that analyze the housing industry for a living that negative equity is the single most important driver of defaults. Negative equity has made managing a mortgage a real financial hardship. It is also one of the culprits for why the Federal government mortgage modification program to fix the housing problems in the country has been unsuccessful.

Lowering principal appears to be one of the best ways to fix the housing crisis in America. The government has been reluctant due to moral hazard. This is when people enjoy the fruits of their actions without having to suffer any of the consequences so they do it more.

The Obama administration is probably scared of the political fallout if people believe that their neighbors have been bailed out while they are struggling financially. It then becomes an issue of unfairness. The truth is that after bailing out Wall Street which could end up costing trillions to the U.S. taxpayer, the moral hazard issue should no longer be used.

Super Bowl Response Ad Will Not Improve Race Relations

A response Super Bowl ad illustrates why people of color need to be a part of the decision making process.

A young, white superstar college football quarterback Tim Tebow has been tapped to appear in a Super Bowl ad with his mother Pam.

The ad is about saying no to abortion and promoting life. Tim's mother Pam while on a missionary trip with her husband contracted amoebic dysentery and the medicines used for her recovery threatened her unborn fetus.

Doctors advised her to abort the fetus and Pam ignored their advice and gave birth to Tim Tebow. This is the gist of the ad.

Due to religious beliefs, there are many Americans that are against abortions. There is another group of people in this country that do not believe in abortions for a completely different reason.

These are the white Americans that are concerned that they are slowly but surely losing their majority status in America. Since more white women have abortions than any other ethnic or racial group, stopping abortions and promoting life has become a strategy to reverse the declining white population trends.

Abortion rights advocates were surprised that a major broadcast network would allow a political advocacy ad since they have been avoided for years. A counter ad promoting a women's right to choose is now in the works.

This is where it becomes interesting. Ex-Vikings player Sean James and Olympic gold medalist Al Joyner were hired to star in the response ad to Tim Tebow's ad.

It makes all the sense in the world to use athletes in the response ad. However, the decision to use two black men in an ad promoting a women's right to choose versus a white guy promoting life is unbalanced and just stupid at best.

Abortion is an explosive issue in this country. It makes sense to show racial and ethnic balance whenever possible when dealing with such an emotional issue; therefore, it would have have been better to have at least one white athlete in the ad promoting a women's right to choose.

This is needed because too many Americans will see these ads as nothing more than whites promoting life and blacks promoting abortions.

Large Percentage Of Republicans Think Obama Is Racist, Socialist, & Non-U.S. Citizen

The new poll of more than 2,000 self-identified Republican voters illustrates the incredible paranoia and brainwashing of many Americans. The same methods were used during the Bush years when the majority of Americans were led to believe that Sadaam Hussein was connected to al-Qaeda and 9/11 which was used as an argument to justify war with Iraq.

Here are some interesting numbers provided by The Daily Kos .

36 percent of Republicans believe Obama was not born in the United States, 22 percent are not sure, 42 percent think he is a natural citizen.

63 percent of Republicans think Obama is a socialist, 16 percent are not sure, 21 percent say he is not

31 percent of Republicans believe Obama is a "Racist who hates White people" -- the description once adopted by Fox News's Glenn Beck. 33 percent were not sure, and 36 percent said he was not a racist.

These poll results may answer, explain why the Republicans have been the party of no since Obama has become President.

Smart, Beautiful, And Young

Caressa Cameron who is Miss Virginia won the 2010 Miss America crown. She is a 22 year old woman, and the daughter of a contractor and background researcher for the government.

She has spoken about being motivated to enter and compete in pageants at the age of 14, when Miss Virginia 2003 Nancy Redd visited her school. This is another example of how seeing someone like yourself in a position that is positive can have a lasting impact on a child, teenager, or young adult. Nancy Redd, the 2003 Miss Virginia is also a woman of color.

Caressa Cameron, is a broadcast journalism student at Virginia Commonwealth University. She plans to take off the year from school to handle all the fundraising and charity work that comes with the territory of being Miss America.

We should all celebrate her and her accomplishments to date. If you have a young daughter, make sure that they know about this beautiful, young, and smart woman that looks just like her.

Note: Miss America & Miss USA are two different pageants that people normally confuse. The winner of the Miss USA pageant represents the United States in the Miss Universe 2010 competition. However, Caressa Cameron will be very happy with the $50,000 dollars in scholarship money which she won in the Miss America 2010 pageant.
